Rainy Day Activities For Toddlers

I think we can safely say that Summer is now over, Autumn officially starts on the 23rd September and if previous years are anything to go by I think we may be in for some rainy days so how do you keep your children amused when the weather is awful outside?  Arthur is 2 and he knows what he likes to do when it comes to activities, he loves to be outside so any indoor activities need to really capture his attention or he gets bored.  Below I have listed some of my favourite rainy day activities for toddlers that will hopefully give you some ideas about what you can do with your own children when it’s cold and wet outside.

Just because it’s cold and wet doesn’t mean you have to say indoors, one of our favourite rainy day activities is put on our waterproof coats and trousers and a pair of wellington boots and go puddle jumping, I have to admit that I sometimes enjoy this more than Arthur and I do get some funny looks but as long as he is having fun I don’t care what people think.

The next activity isn’t just a rainy day activity but I find that it’s appreciated more when it’s wet outside.  We love to bake and there is nothing better on a cold and wet day than a freshly baked loaf or some cupcakes to enjoy whilst looking out of the window.  I take my mixing bowl to the kitchen table so Arthur can get involved with the mixing, I find this safer than letting him stand on a chair against the worktop.

Playing with branded playdough is an activity that I really don’t enjoy, it drives me mad when the colours get mixed so to save my sanity and allow Arthur to mix his colours I have resorted to making my own dough which can be disposed of after use.  I add glitter, colour and scent to my playdough and Arthur really enjoys to make a mess with it, it’s non toxic too so I don’t worry if any gets ingested accidentally although it doesn’t taste very good.

When I was little my favourite activity was making pasta pictures with spaghetti and Farfalline, pasta shapes are now available in all shapes and sizes and you can make some great pictures using different shaped pieces of pasta, I usually need to help Arthur with the PVA glue but he does the sticking all by himself.

My final rainy day activity is one that you can probably remember playing as a child and it’s indoor camping or making a den, We take a superking size sheet and drape it over the table and chairs and climb inside with the cushions, the toys usually end up coming in too which doesn’t leave much room but it does keep Arthur entertained for a few hours and if you sense your child is getting bored you can turn it into the gruffalos house or turn it into one of the three little pigs houses.

What was your favourite rainy day activity as a child and what activities do you do with your children?
